Task Assessment

 

Educational requirements in state and city massage laws

 

The task included assessment of actual copies of nineteen state massage laws and one state reflexology law, a summation of state massage laws, and information about city massage / reflexology laws. (See also pages 29 to 35.)

 

(The accuracy of this assessment reflects the accuracy of the material available. Error is possible as whole state laws were not available in some cases, updates on laws or the current law may or may not be included in the collection surveyed, and this is a lay-person interpretation of law. Please notify committee of factual errors.)

 

Educational requirements in State and City massage laws

1. Completion of a course of study

19 of 19 State massage laws and the 1 State reflexology law requires  completion of a course of study

2. Approval of Curriculum

14 of the 19 require approval of school curriculum; 9 from the massage  regulatory agency, 3 from AMTA, and 2 from educational departments.

3. Hours of education

9 of 19 require 500 hours of education

6 require from 570 to 650 hours

1 requires 1000 hours

2 require graduation from a school as does the one State reflexology law

4. Completed course of study

Completed a course of study with a curriculum approved by the AMTA and  school accredited by an agency recognized by the US Department of  Education: Connecticut

Completed a course of study approved by the AMTA and is an active member  of the AMTA: North Dakota (massage)

Completed a course of study approved by the AMTA or equivalent: Rhode  Island

Completed course of study from a massage board/massage regulatory  agency approved-school: Iowa

Completed a course of study from a reputable school of reflexology with  curriculum approved by the board: North Dakota (reflexology)

Completed course of study from a massage board/ massage regulatory  agency approved-school in standards/curriculum approved by the board:  Arkansas, Florida, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, Texas,  Washington

Completed course of study from an educational department approved-school  in standards/curriculum approved by the board: Louisiana

Graduation from a school with a program registered with the department and  curriculum in subjects approved by the Education Department: New York

5. Hours of education

See above #3.

Proposed legislation for licensing of reflexology in Pennsylvania requires a  200 hour reflexology instructor-supervised training program and certification  through the ARCB, International Institute of Reflexology or certification  approved by the board"

Proposed legislation for licensing reflexology in the state of Florida requires  completion of a minimum 200-hour course of study in reflexology at a  Board-approved reflexology or massage school. (Curriculum approval needed.)

6. Membership in national association

North Dakota and Chicago require membership in a national association

7. National testing

11 of the 19 require a national test (9 of these require the written part only)

8. Teacher requirements

Texas: Registered massage therapist, Two years of professional practice  additional training and teacher training or demonstrated competency in  teaching adult learners.

Instructor: education in the area of instruction, One year of experience within  the last ten years.

9. Schools requirements

14 of the 19 require curriculum approval

Washington accepts the curriculum requirements of a national association as  does North Dakota, Connecticut and Rhode Island

Texas state law lists 24 pages of teacher and schools requirements.
